DAF XB Electric is equipped with Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LFP) batteries

DAF Trucks goes to the Cenex Expo at UTAC Millbrook next week very much aligned with the show’s theme of ‘Net Zero – Connected Automated Mobility’. The UK’s market-leading truck manufacturer is showing its new DAF XB Electric, designed and built in Britain at Leyland Trucks in Lancashire.

Experts from DAF Trucks’ growing EV department will also be at Cenex to present and discuss a full range of total charging solutions including PACCAR Chargers and PACCAR power supply systems, together helping DAF customers and DAF Dealers create energy storage systems and control systems to deliver optimum vehicle charging.

The DAF XB Electric is available at 12-tonne, 16-tonne and 19-tonne GVW

DAF XB Electric

The compact and manoeuvrable New Generation DAF XB Electric model is ideally suited to a range of zero emission applications including city distribution.

Depending on GVW, the DAF XB Electric’s e-motor provides 120 (12-tonnes) or 190kW (16-tonne and 19-tonne) of nominal power, and a nominal torque of 950 and 1850Nm (respectively 2600 and 3500 Nm peak). The cobalt and magnesium-free lithium ferro phosphate (LFP) high energy density batteries are available in capacities of 141, 210 or 282kWh, enabling ranges of up to 350 ultra-quiet, zero-emissions kilometres.

Overnight and fast charging

The DAF XB Electric is equipped with a ‘Combined Charging System’ allowing the truck to be charged using its standard 22 kW AC onboard charger; ideal for when returning to base at the end of the day, whilst rapid charging is also possible at up to 150 kW DC, meaning 20% to 80% takes a mere 40 to 70 minutes, depending on battery pack specification.

To assist customers in their transition to zero emissions road transport, DAF Trucks’ comprehensive support offering includes a broad range of PACCAR Power Solutions, advice on route planning and charging, and the provision of dedicated training for drivers.

The DAF Electric Range also includes XD Electric and XF Electric models for heavier and longer distance applications including 20-tonnes GVW and 28-tonne GVW 4x2 and 6x2 rigid configurations, and 42-tonne GCW 4x2 tractor models.

PACCAR Power Solutions at BEST Trucks, the DAF Electric Truck Centre in Barendrecht, Netherlands

PACCAR Power Solutions
Supporting operators in the deployment of electric vehicles PACCAR Power Solutions offers not only a comprehensive range of chargers to suit cars, vans, buses and trucks, but also complete power solutions to deliver cost-effective and sustainable energy for charging fleets.
Recent projects include a successfully implemented on-site power supply system at BEST Trucks, the DAF Electric Truck Centre in Barendrecht, Netherlands. The so-called ‘microgrid’ consists of 750 roof-mounted solar panels, an energy storage system and advanced energy control systems. The microgrid can supercharge trucks leaving the workshop and can power a public super-fast charger.
The project began with the installation of an Energy Storage System with a battery storage capacity of 480 kWh, an Energy Management System (EMS) and three super-fast charger outlets with a maximum output of 360kW. These are connected to the 750 solar panels as well as the electricity grid. Two chargers are installed in the workshop, available to power-up electric trucks within one hour. A third, fast charging point is publicly accessible.
The EMS gathers all relevant data, from expected hours of sunshine to energy usage and peaks in electricity grid demand, and adjusts for highest efficiency and lowest energy costs.

ZEHID
DAF’s larger XD Electric and XF Electric models – which go into production soon in the UK at Leyland Trucks as well in DAF’s dedicated Electric Truck Factory in the Netherlands – will feature prominently in the UK Government’s and Innovate UK’s Zero Emission HGV & Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) programme. ZEHID will see fleets comprised primarily of battery electric trucks rolled-out through four consortia, each with a responsibility to demonstrate the efficacy of higher weight / longer-distance zero emissions operations.
